Virtual Private Networking (VPN) client software creates a secure connection between your computer and the RISD network. VPN clients encrypt all data passed between your computer and destinations within RISD, making it very difficult for data to be intercepted and read. Members of the RISD community can use our VPN services at no cost to connect to some campus servers remotely.
Do I need VPN to work from off-campus?This would depend on the files or services you need to access. Not all RISD services require VPN to connect off-campus. Below is a quick chart to help you determine your VPN need. Not sure? Contact the IT Service Desk.

VPN for Faculty, Staff and StudentsGlobalProtect is available for our commuity to connect to RISD's network from home. Follow the instructions to install and configure the program. After GlobalProtect is configured, you'll sign in with your RISD account username and password to establish the secure VPN connection to the RISD network.

- Test the VPN connection from your remote location before you need to use it!
- Disconnect the VPN connection when not in use.
- Make sure the GlobalProtect software is up-to-date
How to check your version of GlobalProtect- Click the GlobalProtect icon
- Click the Menu icon
- Select About
- GlobalProtect should be on version 5.2 or higher (as of 1/15/2021)
